SHELLY CHILTON

Artist | Product Developer Surface Pattern Designer Fashion Designer

I design with a balanced creative and analytical mindset.  For my clients, I tell your story in art and design with a mission to always meld beauty and function.  I’ve worn many creative hats!  The first half of my career was in fashion, as an evening wear designer in the Garment District of NYC, creating for labels for mass-production in nationwide department stores and boutiques – rapidly climbing the ranks from Assistant to Associate Designer, before heading two eveningwear labels in less than two years.  I had the good fortune of being a part of the design team that dressed a former Second Lady of the United States, as well as had my dresses featured in magazines on rising celebrities – now huge stars.  After several years in NYC and a move back to the Midwest to start a family, a natural change in career ensued with product development and graphic arts (art was my first love, long before fashion). A decade later, I had a whirlwind, exciting detour back into apparel with a hit-making (and news-making) entrepreneurial collaboration as co-founder and designer of a patented leggings company.

Aside from clothing design, I have years of experience in product development in housewares, with mass merchandise sold at major retailers worldwide from Target to Bed, Bath & Beyond.  Partner-aligned or solo, my product designs have ranged from colorful die-cut coir doormats to various kitchen, bath & garden items made from ceramics, melamine, resin, ABS plastic and stainless steel.  One outdoor design was one of three winners of the 2010 “Green House” awards, recognized by the International Housewares Association, for being an eco-responsible product.  I also create original art by hand and digital for an array of clients’ needs.   Book covers, calendar art, web page design, advertising, logo & branding, social media marketing, digital scrapbook art and more.  My artistic style is broad & varied and applicable to many areas or industries.  Additionally, Sable Crane is my lifestyle brand, born of a desire to craft original looks straight from my very particular design mind when creating for the homes of clients and myself.

“I gave Shelly some challenges that many people in the fashion industry may have rejected or otherwise dealt with poorly. She was terrific. She asked questions, made suggestions and was completely open to modifications. She took on my project as if it were her own, and I now consider her a part of my creative team. I definitely plan to use her again.”
